Your Guide to Propagating Plants

By Chanel

If you’ve ever wanted to grow new plants from your existing ones, water propagation is such a fun place to start. It’s simple, satisfying, and one of those little planty joys that never gets old. It's really satisfying seeing the first few roots start to grow.

Our propagation set was put together to make the process feel easy and lovely to display at home too. It has everything you need to get started: glass jars with cork tops, clay pebbles, prop drops and plant coasters.

What is water propagation?

Water propagation is when you take a cutting from a plant and place it in water so it can grow roots. Once those roots are well established, you can keep the cutting in water for a while or move it into another growing medium later on.

It’s a great way to grow your collection, make use of cuttings when pruning, or even create a thoughtful little gift for another plant lover.

How to propagate plants in water

Start with a healthy cutting from a plant. The most important thing is making sure it has at least one node, because that’s where the roots will grow from. Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line, then place the cutting into your propagation jar with fresh water. Some plants like Monsteras do better if you wait a day for the cutting to callus or you can dip the end into some wax to seal the freshly cut end.

To give it a little boost, add 1–2 drops of propagation drops to the water. That’s all you need.

Then place the jar somewhere with bright, indirect light and refresh the water regularly. After a little while, you should start to see roots forming.

Plants that root really well in water

Some plants are especially easy to propagate, which makes them perfect if you’re just getting started.

A few favourites are:

  • Pothos - one of the easiest and most reliable plants to root
  • Philodendron - beginner-friendly and usually quick to root
  • Monstera - roots well and looks beautiful in a propagation jar
  • Syngonium - easy-going and rewarding to propagate
  • Tradescantia - very fast and great for beginners
  • Spider Plant babies - probably one of the easiest of all

Why LECA is so great for propagation

LECA, or clay pebbles, is a really useful medium for propagation. It helps support your cutting in the jar so it doesn’t flop around too much, and it gives the roots a bit of airflow as they develop.

It’s also clean, reusable, and looks lovely in a clear jar. If you like a propagation setup that feels neat and simple, LECA is a great option.

Don’t forget the coasters

Plant coasters might seem like a small extra, but they’re really handy. Propagation jars can leave water rings or marks on shelves, desks, windowsills, and wooden furniture over time, so coasters help keep your surfaces protected and ring free.

A quick safety note

When using any kind of plant additive, it’s always best to use it carefully. For this set, just 1–2 drops in the water is enough.

As with any additive, please store it somewhere out of reach of children and pets.
